Related to number of files causing issues with speed, there are number of factors, like the file system, OS, BIOS settings etc. I experienced a problem when I had created a directory on CentOS (ext3 filesystem)with more than 5 million files. It took good over 45 minutes to delete it although none of the file was over 1KB.
